On the brink of a financial collapse, Iceland voted for a new government yesterday. It looks like the current interim government of the centre-left parties Samfylking and Vinstrihreyfingin - grænt framboð, lead by current interim prime minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir, wins the day. The newly created party from the democratic movement, Borgarahreyfingin, got around seven percent. Not bad for their first election participation.
Central issues for the new government are of course how to handle the bad economy and as well their stance on getting Iceland into the European Union (EU). Samfylking wants Iceland to join the EU, Vinstrihreyfingin not.
I am not sure if getting Iceland into the EU would be that great for the country. I am very sceptical, because I suspect our EU bureaucrats only to exploit the Icelandic resources: fish, energy and thereby destroying the great Icelandic landscape. Well, the latter can be done by Icelanders too: they allowed building the Kárahnjúkavirkjun in Eastern Iceland to power the aluminium smelter of Alcoa.
